I made my 2nd sculpted/3D cake and I'm so happy with it! This was made for my nephew who's turning 12 and loves to fish and said that he "was put on this earth to fish." He also just joined a junior bass fishing club. The fish itself is rice krispie treats and then covered in the MMF and then detailed and hand painted. The cake is strawberry, his favorite, with buttercream. I made the cattails from gum paste. I also made some lures, sinkers and bobbers and put them on cupcakes as decoration.

For next weekend I'm trying a bust of a character from a video game (Noble 6 from Halo: Reach) for my husband's nephew's birthday, will be a lot of fun!

LOL! I hear that... I think I have a looong ways to go! I think some people use store bought, but I haven't. I've just always made them myself so when I started making cakes I just continued. I also figured it was a little more budget friendly but, honestly, I've never looked at what the pre-made treats cost at the store. I've gotten to where I can make a big batch of them fairly quick so that works for me. :)

Do people use "store bought" RKT for 3D figured cakes... I'm assuming this is a "yes"...? (well... maybe I still have a little ways to go for being in the "in" crowd...? lol!!!)

Oh... of course I know what Rice Krispie Treats are...!!! And YES!!! VERY YUMMY!!! I just never thought of the abbreviation... Are store bought ones any good...? also made by Kellogg's... right...? I know some people making "Lambeth" Cakes uses the store bought RKT (I'm now in the "in" crowd because I now know the Abbreviation...lol!!!) for the bottom layer for "beveled" cakes...

And still... the best fish cake I've ever seen...

Thank you! RKT = Rice Krispie Treats, or rice cereal treats. Very yummy! Great for sculpting but I have had issues with them staying together in the summer here in Texas, due to the marshmallow in them becoming very soft in the heat.

The best fish cake I've ever seen... What's RKT...? Rita Dryer says "I've never made RKT"...? What's that...

(does it involve fish...?)

Hi Rita. Thank you! I use the recipe on the box, or the one at thier website (sometimes the box will have some other recipe on it): http://www.ricekrispies.com/recipes/the-original-treats.aspx?utm_so...

I used a quarter sheet pan for the base cake part since there wasn't going to be too many people at the party. Was just the family. I can't remember how much of a recipe I used. I think I might have used one whole batch, possibly more because I compressed them pretty good around the dowel. I did attach the fins separately using toothpicks I put in the fins before they dried, as well as a little water on the edge of the fins that were touching the fish. I also dried them in the curved shapes over some rolled up paper.

I hope this helps! I also had made an Instructable for it, but it's not too detailed: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Bass-Fish-Cake/

Good luck woth the cake! I hope it all works out! let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help. :)

I Love this Cake Tami!  I have a cake order to make a Bass fish, I'm just wondering, I've never made RKT, yes you heard me right, the one time I tried to make RKT it was a total dissaster!  LOL!  Which recipe did you use, and is this an 11x15 sheet cake?  I'm trying to figure out what size to make the fish! Did you use a whole recipe for  RKT for the fish? Did you attach the fins separately?  Thanks Tami!

Rita
