Wichita!

Hi Vicki! I'm in Wichita, too! I took my Wilton classes at Cake Stuff, which IMO is the coolest place. I go to the one at Central & Tyler.

Agreed on Cake Stuff! Love it! I just started teaching Wilton classes myself, at the Hobby Lobby in Hutchinson!

Good for you! How long have you been at cake decorating? My Wilton classes were in the "old" format with 4 classes and the Fondant and Gumpaste separate. Do you like the new class format? How many are in your classes? Some of my relatives live in Hutch but it's been a long time since I went to the Hobby Lobby over there, so I bet it's changed. The town is changing a lot, too. I'm rambling - enjoy your new career! :)

I've been doing it for about 3 years now, I think? Yeah, about 3 years. I took them in the old format too. I do like the new format - it's a lot more practical, IMO. And updated. They're no longer pretending that the basketweave is the latest craze! LOL

This is my first class ever for November, and I'm just doing the Decorating Basics for the first three months (there hasn't been an instructor at this location for a while). I have 5 in my class this month, but hope to continue to build the program. It's fun - I'm in Human Resources for my day job, so it's nice to actually be teaching a class where people want to hear what I have to say! When I'm talking about sexual harassment and controlling workers' comp costs . .. notsomuch. LOL

I see some cute and easy things in the new format that I want to try like the ribbon rose - it has a different look, and I think it'd work well on a modern funky cake with polka dots or whatever. I still like regular roses too of course (and am still working on getting my technique on those consistent, sigh).

As for basketweave, it was rather tedious, though I've seen it on a few contemporary cakes, not many. It adds so much frosting to the cake - maybe an expert could avoid this, but I couldn't. It was too thick even for me and I'm a buttercream frosting fiend. ;)

I can also see why they combined all the fondant and gumpaste course material together. I think they only had it as a separate class before for the benefit of those who hadn't worked in fondant or only had one project like a wedding cake in fondant that they wanted to do.

Welcome new member Chendra! :)

I confess I've still been rather inactive with cakes AND posting here. It's getting to the point where if I don't do some serious decorating soon I fear I'll forget how! :O

Just need to take a leisurely day (what are those, I've forgotten) and play with some sugary stuff.

Hello from Wakefield, Kansas!! I started taking the Wilton classes in January of 2012 and have been enjoying cake decorating every since! I am also a member of Yummy Arts and other cake decorating sites.
