Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I just wanted to share the excitement I felt when I finally had a go at making gelatine butterflies. I wanted to practice them before the wedding cake I have to do in March and was concerned that they wouldn't hold up in humidity or that they would look cheap and nasty and plastic. I was very pleased with the results, and so was the bride to be when I emailed her a pic too.

Wow very nice

How lovely. Very talented you are.

So pretty!!

They look good!! I recently went to a cake show in Ohio and I purchased the gelatin sheets, bows, leaves, flowers and butterflys but I havent tried them out yet. Now, seeing yr pretty butterflies, I'm going to stop being nervous and try it out :-)

I've had the sheets for just over 12mths and haven't done anything with them at all until now. Some of the gelatine flowers and butterflies that although technically well done, looked plastic and nasty and I didn't want that look for the wedding cake I've got to do. So I would say get some gelatine and bite the bullet and give it a go. I had a lot of angst to start with, not sure if I could get the result I wanted, but I was more than happy with the way it turned out.

I know you can simply buy butterflies, but this way I can match colours with the paste and petal dusts I have, and I don't have to wait for them to arrive in the post or try to find them in a store!

Butterflies are my thing, although I've only used sugar paste, handpainting or dusting all the colours. These are very pretty & well done :)

Thank you everyone for you nice comments!

@ Tracy I had only made fondant ones too up till this point, and now I have another option up my sleeve, I also love the delicate look of the printed rice paper ones. For some reason it makes it more amazing that you can achieve this look with something that it technically edible, like flowers.

Great job!

Beautiful!
