How to make the fondant cake surface beautiful????

I found so many peoples cake are perfect. But I can't find a useful way to make the surface smooth and glossy. I have tried to brush water or wine.  But it's not perfect and has a false bad shine that a beautiful cake dosen't have. The cake I prefer  is clean, smooth and has the sense of reality

There are various ways to do this, depending on what you have or what colour your fondant is.

You can paint it with a mix of gel colour and vodka, or just plain vodka.

You can rub it with shortening

You can steam it.

I'm sure there are other ways, but these are the ones that I know of that come to mind.

Firstly Lyra

DO NOT apply water or wine, that will dry your fondant out. Steaming is different, you are going over your cake lightly, it doesn't absorb as much as if you were brushing water on.  Rubbing on shortening as Katy says will create a shine. You can also brush on a mixture of corn syrup & water, but that takes a very long time to dry. You can also use lustre dust mixed with vodka. The vodka/alcohol will evaporate, and the shine of the dust stays behind. Hope this helps.   :o)

Thank you! I'll try rubbing shortening and steam.  It's useful to me. (^_^)

Try the steam 1st.  I had two steamers... loved them, but they both broke and began to leak....  grrrrr

I bought just a regular kettle with a long cord.... easier to wave back & forth over the cake. Don't get it too close or the steam will melt your fondant.   :o)

The crumb coat should be smooth first before you cover it with fondant. I saw on Cake Boss that they use a smoother and a steamer to make it glossy.

Well said Maria - I forgot to mention the fondant smoother.

Yes I too forgot to mention the smoother. No point steaming your cake or applying lustre dust if your cake isn't lovely and smooth before you start.   :0)

thank you! it's very useful to me.i have fondant smoother but it didn't have a good role.i think the smooth cake surface is important!now its hot in my country and the buttercream is easy to melt.so i  cover two layers fondant instead of the buttercream .and i'll try to steam it!

Miss Lyra you can put ganache on the cake first instead of buttercream if the weather is hot. That's what I always do because I live in a tropical country. It doesn't melt and your it gives good taste to the cake if people doesn't want to eat the fondant.

Good that you mentioned about the kettle. I don't have a steamer and never tried yet steaming fondant cake. I will try tomorrow. Thanks June!

I use a kettle too.  Havent tried it on a whole cake, but it works wonders on sugar flowers.
