You can pipe with it.  It's a little trickier than buttercream with powdered sugar and butter and or shortening.  Because it's almost mostly butter it melts quicker if you have hot hands.  When it gets soft I either put my bags in the refrigerator or I use Serious Cakes Insta-frig...that is I take a cake pan and fill it with water and freeze it.  When it's frozen take it out of the freezer and place another cake pan (I use round ones any shape will work) and place it on top of the pan with ice.  Lay your bags on the top pan.  It helps to keep your icing cold and helps it to set up better.  There is a video here for the "insta-fridge"...I will try to find it.

To make this recipe into chocolate buttercream, you would add 1/2 cup of bittersweet chocolate that has been melted and cooled after all the butter has been incorporated. I did this last week for a birthday cake that I made for my daughter's future mother-in-law's birthday. It was fantastic!!

Connie, I'm happy you liked it. It is easy once someone breaks the steps down to you.

It was super easy. I was very surprised because like I said I was afraid to try it because it seemed so complicated but this video broke it down and made it easy. Most importantly... the icing was YUMMY!
