Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am a good baker... solid skills but could use a lot of help in the decoration world. any advice. my dtr is going to get married in about 12 months and would love to make her the wedding cake she deserves. I figure with a year to go and lots of practice I can get there. Any advice?

I agree with all of the below, a trial run is a good because then you can anticipate some problems. Make up a timeline as you get closer to the event so you know what you're doing each day and don't forget any steps. Get as much done ahead of time as possible like wrapping cake boards, bag prep, etc.

In addition to the below advice...you might want to do a trial run or two...only in mini size...practice stacking, tiering, supporting...the construction of a wedding cake vital...make some small cakes and donate to your local senior center or youth group. The classes would probably help, but I have learned a ton (classes too far from where I live) off of the free vids either here or youtube or whereever you can find them. And of course there is always the support you can find here along the way!!!

We have a bunch of videos here that will help. You have to master the easy stuff first, but you do have plenty of time. We have some really amazing cake decorators here who haven't been decorating long. It's doable if you practice.

Hello Barry, I've been taking wilton cake decorating classes and they have been really helpful. I've tried learning from books but its so much better when you have an instructor. you can check out A.C. Moore or Micheals they both offer the classes.
