With a few small changes you can dramatically improve the quality of your cake photos! Some people will spend a small amount of money to create a little "photo studio" with some special lighting and back grounds but if you're a hobbiest or don't have extra money to spend on any additionals then here's a few simple ideas to help you out!

Additional ideas:

-use a plain white sheet or large craft paper as a background
-take several photos at different angles until you get the best shot
-use a tripod to steady the camera if you're in low light conditions to avoid blurred photos
-check out a free online tool like picnik.com to edit your photos
-experiment with different light sources
-avoid "parts of people" in your background

If anyone else has suggestions please feel free to share your ideas!

Best of Luck from the KupKake Tree!! :-)

Brilliant tips, I always when possible take photos of my cakes in natural light.
And this is a tip from a professional who was watching me take photos of my finished wedding cake at the reception. ........ in natural light if your cake is white or ivory never use a flash, if you do you'll loose the detail!
And another tip is when taking photos of a wedding cake you don't have to centre them, If you take a look at some of my wedding cakes I sometimes just have half the cake in the pic......... very arty!

It may be the camera I have..not very expensive one..But I have recently found that if I use a small lamp which has a arm that moves and directed it right at the cake, I get my best shots..even with my white cakes. There is nothing more fustrating than to put all that work into a project and not be able to get a decent picture of it. But then agian, it may be the camera I have.

Great tips! I have found using a black card table set in the right spot in my kitchen works great. Also - I use a black pagmina draped over a box behind the cake if it's too tall to get a good shot just on the card table.
