DO NOT apply water or wine, that will dry your fondant out. Steaming is different, you are going over your cake lightly, it doesn't absorb as much as if you were brushing water on. Rubbing on shortening as Katy says will…"

You can paint it with a mix of gel colour and vodka, or just plain vodka.
