Hi Anita, sorry I've confused myself!!!!!!! what I meant to say is when your practicing straight lines, writing etc you should have a sag  in the icing.

I wouldn't attempt to do the scrolling I've done on this cake until you are experienced  in royal icing.

I'ts very difficult to pipe on the sides of cakes as you know,  when I'm piping alot of royal icing ends up being wiped off!!!!!! the tip is 4----- not sure if you have the same numbered tips as the UK . And yes I did use the same tip for all the decor.

Thank you Anita for all your kind words.

Love your piping...  You say to keep the tip at least one inch above the icing but in looking at your cake, how do you get the wider areas if you are at that distance?  It looks as though you just applied more pressure for those areas.  And, how do you do it while working on the side of a cake?  One more question, what size tip did you use and did you use the same size for all of it?  I really love this cake,,,beautiful job!  Thanks for the help!

Thank you Anne, it's with a fondant covered cake and royal icing, although I think you could do this in buttercream.

I used to teach cake decorating, And the best advice I can give you is to practice . Draw squares and circles and scrolling on to a sheet of paper and then pipe onto the paper untill you feel confident.
Another last tip is when piping, the nozel(I think you call it a tip) should be at least an 1" above your surface with a sag in the icing, don't stretch it or it will break.
Good luck with your piping
