You did a wonderful cake here, and she is the looser in the long run, not you.  Because she didn't get THIS cake!!

Sorry to read what happened to you Becky, people are rude sometimes.  I usually ask for 50% deposit and the rest on delivery day.  This cake is beautiful, glad you gave it to the fire dpartment.

Sorry to hear that Becky.  I see it all the time on various groups that I belong to and the only solution is to do what you are proposing.  You have to remember that not everyone is as honourable as we are and business is business.  You cannot afford to be soft.  So do your 50% deposit rule and make no exceptions.  That way, at least you are covered for your initial outlay (cake drums etc) in the event of default.

I have never sold a cake, just made for family and friends, but have wondered how to deal with this kind of thing if I ever decide to bake/decorate for money.  You are doing exactly what I came up with as fair to all parties....50%, non-refundable up front.  That should be enough to cover expenses, anyway, even if there is no profit.  As a portrait painter, I have run into the same thing - thankfully up front and not after I completed the painting.  I developed a perfect come-back for people who thought I charged too much for my painting......"if you don't like it, do it yourself".  When they started to protest that they could not do it, I confirmed to them that they had just made my point.  End of discussion.  Sounds ugly, but so is wanting someone to expend expense and unknown hours creating something for which they are not willing to compensate.  Sorry, I will get off the bandwagon now :o/

Yes -I blocked them on Facebook so they can't even see stuff I post. Then.... It happened again yesterday on a wedding cake that was to be done this week. Fortunately I hadn't made anything yet but do have cake drum that I special ordered plus have turned down orders. This is 3 times this month. I'm so frustrated. I don't know if their finding cheaper cakes somewhere else, if they decided mine aren't good enough or what. I posted last night on my business page that going forward a 50% deposit is required on all cakes to reserve a date. I feel bad about doing that but getting tired of people abusing me!!

rude, lily-livered and pathetic.  These people make me want to go out and slap them.  Glad you found a use for Elmo, Becky.  I assume this person is now black-listed?
