That really looks like knit. Wonderful.

Thanks again Rima!  The hat was piped in butter icing, using lemon, lime and strawberry flavours to match the colours.  I used a No. 10 nozzle by Nutbrown that you would usually use for a leaf or similar, but dragged it backwards and forwards horizontally as I was piping, to get the frill effect to look like crochet or knitting.  I was pleased with the result on this one.

This is fantastic! How did you do the hat?

Why thanks Timothy!  This was one of the rare times when I was happy with the result.  It was quite fiddly, but I think the effects worked.  I was particularly happy with the hat!  I think the nicest thing of all was that Tommo was almost in tears when he saw it.  He's in his 50's and he said "no-one has ever done anything like this for me before", so the grief was well worth it!

Thank you Sandie.  I really had fun making this one.  Everything edible except his candle.  However, the recipient flatly refused to cut the hat part of the cake (and still hasn't to this day - yuk!)
