Hi everyone - I'm from Barrie too. Moved to Canada 6 months ago from the UK as hubbie and I wanted a change of scenery. Been into cake decorating for over 3 years and am hoping to do it professionally once we have our own place.

I buy my supplies at Michaels, Golda's Kitchen, Creative Cutters, Bulk Barn and Sugar Tiers...and so far I find Michaels with the best prices just as long as you use their discount coupons.I am always looking for Cake decorating stores.

Hi, I'm from Mitchell (one hour north of London, Ontario). I bought my round pans from Bulk Barn 3 years ago when I was preparing to do my first cake (my daughter's wedding cake). I have taken 2 of the Wilton courses so far. I found that they gave me that extra confidence that I needed. I just recently did my second wedding cake (for my niece) and it turned out great.

In my cake class last night, I was told that, in Canada, if I want to sell my cakes from home there are special requirements (ie. a special 'baking' kitchen) and a health inspection is necessary if I want to advertise my business. Has anyone else run into this? Apparently, if I sell cakes 'word-of-mouth' this is not an issue because I'm selling to friends or friends of friends, but I was hoping to have a website for my cakes...

Dia, that is true. I had a friend from a message board, she in BC, I beleive and she really had to jump through hoops to be able to do it professionally!

Hey ladies, i'm in Toronto...just reading some of your posts. I did not know about requirements to open up a business...my friend and I are planning on doing so...what are the steps to doing this?

Meera...I've been told to open a legal business that you can advertise, you should call the Ontario Health Board to find out the criteria. I think it may involve having a separate kitchen with proper fridges, stoves, dishwasher, etc. and then a safety inspector has to come to your house. Otherwise, you can just make cakes by word-of-mouth. When you're just baking for friends (or friends of friends- acquaintences!) you can do as many of those as a "hobby" as you want! If you want to be absolutly sure without drawing attention you'll have to anonymously check into the regulations with the health board, though, to find out. Good luck and let us know if yo find anything out!
