Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

The Craft Company were doing these mixes for £1.98 each and had a free delivery Friday, so I thought I would try some, just for the heck of it.  My previous experiences with cake mixes in the UK have been less that great, I have to say.  But I have used their bread mix for ages and it's really good.

I have just done the first one - Toffee Cake.  Talk about easy to make.  And the smell! Divine.  My husband is drooling already and wants to know when he can start on it.  I suggested he might want to wait until it was cooked......

So I'll let you know how it tastes.  So far all the signs are good.

OK - this is how it turned out!  Great big swelling in the middle.  I usually bake from scratch and never have this problem, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why?  Could I have beaten it for too long, so too much air?

your oven was probably too hot. it causes it to cook too fast and the center pops up.  try reducing your temp slightly and see what happens.

wilton has these baking strips you can attach around your pan to help with the middle not puffing up.  I tried to find them but I think my brain is still asleep as I couldn't find the name or link to them.  My cakes always puff up so I am impressed that yours don't, and I bake from scratch also. 

Great Deah thanks.   That's quite possible as I had previously cooked puff pastry at a higher temp and just turned the oven down.  Maybe I didn't leave it to get down to temperature for long enough.

lol Faith - I do know exactly what you are talking about!  I'll try Deah's idea of the oven temperature first and see what happens.

If your's puff up from scratch - a little less baking powder perhaps?

The strips are called bake even strips.  If you don't want to buy them, you can make your own by cutting a bath towel in a 2 in strip.  I used this for awhile until I actually bought the strips.

lol G - a bath towel!  Whatever next..............

Heck, Katy, if I ever have that problem, I just take a paper towel and place over it and push it down until it is level. Works every time. No cutting and no waste.

That's what I do too Linda. Would probably have put a rose nail in the middle of the pan as well. Of course, you might have to resort to actually trimming the excess....and EATTING it....  You have to do what you have to do!!!!

Thanks Linda and June - all very useful tips.  I have 3 more of the mixes in different flavours, so hopefully they should come out ok.

So we see how it baked but how does it taste? Any good? Also where is the craft company? Is this something from the internet to order from? I am in SC and do not remember any brand named Kraft Company with Wright cake mix in boxes. Thanks

Katy is from the UK. The company & the mixes can't be bought in USA or Canada.
