Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi, I am very new to cake baking and decorating,(self taught) but love it. I will be doing my third fondant cake in March and I would like to know if the cake mixes will take the weight of fondant. It is two tier but I will be using dowels. My concern is do I need to find a cake recipe to take the weight of fondant. If anyone is willing to share their recipe, I would so love it, for I really do not care for the mixes. The cake is 10" square (3 layers at 2" each) and a 6" square 3 layers at 2" each. Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much for the qick response Sherry. That is the only thing I was worried about. My other fondant cakes were smaller so I was not concerned. Thanks again.
I have used BC mixes for all my cakes for nearly 30 yrs. Roll your fondant about 1/2" thick. This is the thickness of the usual cake board/circle.
That 10" sq is going to take a huge piece of fondant:) it will need to be rolled out to at least 16" sq. It won't be easy to handle.
Most cakes can handle fondant, but I wouldn't put it on sponge cake. I also wouldn't use it with a cake soaked with liquer.
What I was going to try was to either roll it out on plastic, for I would like it thinner then the 1/2".. What I have decided was to roll it out on my counter (with alot of dusting) and with my husbands help, we will both work together to get it on the cake, and if that fails I will try rolling it on plastic....and if that fails I will cover the cake with Buttercream Icing and work from there. I have worked quite a bit with BC so using that as my last resort will be fine. Wish me luck... I will be doing a test cake in the next few weeks.
Thank you Theresa, you all are so great with helping this beginner out. I shout out a big THANK YOU.
I also would like to say I love Cakes We Bake. Thanks for creating it.

We're all still learning. If we didn't want to, no one would be here.
